As promised, here are some of the serving opportunities to strengthen the Cubs Basketball League this year…
Most importantly, we need COACHES! None of this happens without reliable, committed men and women who see a greater purpose in sports; teaching young athletes the benefits of Godly discipline, obedience, teamwork, and respect for authority through sports. In order to effectively accomplish this, we are asking for anyone who feels called to serve as a coach to fill out the volunteer application at www.hcaelgin.org/coachapplication. Practical basketball knowledge is a plus; however, it’s more important to maintain regular attendance and to develop a relationship with the kids. Patience, dedication and encouragement are the priorities we value most in our coaches. If there are any questions, please direct them to myself or Nate Johnson.
One of the biggest changes to the Cubs league is the additional responsibility of coaches to referee their own games. Please bear in mind that you are the primary example of Christ to these young children in what may very well be their first sports experience. There will be a Coaches meeting on November 24 to discuss how this will work.
Last year, we were amazingly blessed with experienced and observant volunteers on our medical team. During the course of the game, bumps, bruises, skinned knees, and even hurt feelings can sideline the athletes. Anyone with any sort of medical training, experience, equipment, and a heart for care-giving should definitely be involved with this very necessary part of the ministry. Please indicate your desire to participate via email to Nate or myself.
Finally, one of the new ideas I would like to implement is a Team Sponsor. The Team Sponsor will be responsible mainly for team communication, coordination, and moral support. Whatever you wish to do additionally, such as a team pizza party or snacks and drinks after the game, will be at your own discretion. Ideally, a Sponsor will act as a unifying community builder, and eventually, I hope to incorporate an at-home Biblical curriculum as part of this league, administered by the Sponsors. If you have a similar vision, please contact either Nate or myself and share your heart.
1 Peter 4:10
“As each one of you has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
